"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#130 (of 365) "Rip Down the Fences That Fence Our Garden" Frog Eyes

12/12/2025

Frog Eyes' Carey Mercer made some of the great indie rock records of the 2000s, while collaborating with some of my favorite artists ever -- notably Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, and Dan Bejar of Destroyer. The brilliance of his offbeat music culminated with Paul's Tomb: A Triumph in 2010 and it took him 3 years for the follow-up, which was about deaths in his family--Carey's Cold Spring--and then instead of touring to support the somber record, he found out he had cancer and maybe wouldn't be making music again. Lucky for all of us, he did recover  ("There was a lot of pain and morphine," he said in 2015) and came out with the full-length 2015 album Pickpocket's Locket, which had my #1 and #2 favorite songs of that year. Pretty amazing stuff. This was my #2 favorite song of that year.
