"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#135 (of 365) "Cadmium" Superchunk

12/12/2025

Back to back are the two pioneers of indie rock and my two favorite bands of all time for most of my life (Superchunk and Pavement). Both came out with releases in 1989 or so but both were 90s bands through and through. Pavement disbanded after their last album in 1999, Superchunk in 2001. Superchunk would return seven years later and have been pumping out amazing records since, cementing their hold as my favorite band ever. Pavement would get back together only sporadically for reunion tours and never for new music, falling behind a couple contemporaries (Built to Spill, Mogwai) in my favorite bands of all time. This song was part of Superchunk's second singles collection, Incidental Music, released in 1995, one year after Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain by Pavement and the same year as Pavement's 3rd album Wowee Zowee and Superchunk's "mainstream" breakthrough Here's Where the Strings Come In. Strings was the first Superchunk album I ever owned and I probably bought Foolish (1994) and this singles collection that same year, as I became super obsessed with Superchunk in 1995, a little before I would become super obsessed with Pavement. But yeah, this is an incredible song.

Why do we ever go outside anymore?
The air in here is cadmium red.
Why do we ever go outside anymore?
The air in here is fine.
I'll let you live inside my lungs
You couldn't breathe anyway!
I'll build you up til you are strong
Til I can't breathe anyway!
