"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#136 (of 365) "Fillmore Jive" Pavement

12/12/2025

This is the closing song off of what has long bene my favorite Pavement album ever, their second release not the slightly more lauded first, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave Crooked Rain a perfect five-star rating, describing it as "the Reckoning to Slanted & Enchanted's Murmur." He concluded that the album was "a vibrant, dynamic, emotionally resonant album that stands as a touchstone of underground rock in the '90s and one of the great albums of its decade."[11] Robert Christgau of the Village Voice gave the album an A grade, describing it as "a tour de force melodywise. In 2003, it was ranked number 8 on Pitchfork's list Top 100 Albums of the 1990s,[25] and in 2010, the song "Gold Soundz" was listed as number one on Pitchfork's 200 Greatest Songs of the 1990s.

Only 3 songs from this album ended up making the list, though. Opener "Silence Kit", this song as the closer, and one more (that will come much higher). "Elevate Me Later", "Unfair", "Range Life" and of course "Cut Your Hair" were staples of my musical obsession in the 90s, but have faded enough that none of them made the list. This song is a perfect representation of the band's sound at that time, though, and still holds up to this day.
