"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#139 (of 365) "Mouth Guards of the Apocalypse" Broken Social Scene

12/6/2025

BSS broke up in 2011 or 2012, which signaled the start of the end of the amazing "indie rock boom(let)" circa 2003-2010 or so, led by largely Canadian bands like Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. I was a fan of BSS but they weren't in my top 20 or 30 favorite bands at the time, so their breakup was more of a sign of "uh oh, this might be ending" then personal regret at losing them. But Wolf Parade followed shortly after and then it really was "the end" and my musical interests ended up taking a turn (first toward the emo/punk/hardcore sounds of TWIABP or Joyce Manor or Cloud Nothings) then toward the beach/shoegaze/dream pop indie rock of DIIV and Real Estate and Beach Fossils and Day Wave in more recent years. The crazy thing is, though, most of the great indie rock bands of the 2000s have returned, in one shape or form, either performing sold out reunion shows or by reforming fully and releasing new music. BSS did both, and I've seen them live ONLY during their reunion performances, which were incredible, by the way, leading me to a new appreciation for the band. But also, unlike most of their contemporaries, the new music they released has been, at least in my opinion, as good as or better than the stuff they were putting out in the 2000s.

This song is among them. From their first post-reunion record in 2017. My number 1 favorite song of that year.
