"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#153 (of 365) "Stadiums and Shrines II" Sunset Rubdown

11/8/2025

The video I found for this song says it was recorded at the First Unitarian Church in Philly in 2006, around the time this album came out. I first saw Spencer's side project band at that exact venue, an awesome, claustrophobic, incredible venue in the basement of a church that could not have possibly passed fire codes but perhaps still has shows--I don't know--but I used to go to shows there a lot, back when I lived in a house in Central Jersey, an hour from both Philly and NYC. I remember the show where I saw Sunset Rubdown the first time. It was 2008 and I know it was right before my (first) knee surgery and I remember thinking how awesome the show was and also that I wouldn't be going to shows for a while (because of the surgery recovery) and how sad that made me. I don't remember specific concerts of specific bands (I estimate I've been to between 600 or 700 shows in my life) but I do remember this concert, and the knee surgery that was forthcoming. Which brings me to now...

I found out yesterday that I need a procedure for my heart. Not super serious, but most likely a stent will be put in, and I'm way too young for heart problems, given my excellent diet and exercise routine. The doctor says it's hereditary, that I have high lipoprotein, which is a trait passed on from my parents and there's nothing I could have done, but I'll probably be on medication to control it, I assume the rest of my life. Which sucks. And having a stent put in sucks. But she says afterwards, I should be able to return to normal activities including my exercise routine and not have to worry about the issues I've been dealing with for the past six months, especially since my bad EKG and stress tests in the last couple months have had me freaked the fucked out about everything. So this is a good thing, in the long run, and unlike the knee surgery, the recovery/rehab won't be so long or intense. My last concert this year was on Halloween night (Beach Fossils) and--interestingly--I don't have another one scheduled until after the new year. Which is for the best. But I'll be back going to shows, and--if the doctor approves--back in the mosh pits before long. But not at a church basement in Philly. More likely a tiny club in Brooklyn :)

There's a kid in there
And he's big, and dumb, and he's kinda scared, and he's
Well, he's too old to be there
He's just looking for a ride

Well, I'll lift it to the ceiling tiles
Of stadiums and shrines
You see something to cheer about
Well, I'll tell you that it's mine

I’m sorry that your mother died
But that one wasn't my fault

And I’m sorry anybody dies at all, these days
