"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#175 (of 365) "Seventeen" Sharon Van Etten

9/12/2025

Sharon Van Etten is more of a folk/country singer than an indie rocker, based on all the music she's made other than this song, but this song--about her older self talking to her younger self at seventeen--is truly an amazing piece of indie / alternative music. It was also prominently featured in Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a 2020 film that Van Eaten also starred in, about a teenage girl driving to NYC with her friend to get an abortion, because her state required parental consent. It's an amazing movie I highly recommend checking out. According to Wikipedia, the film holds an approval rating of 99% based on 238 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average rating of 8.6/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Powerfully acted and directed, Never Rarely Sometimes Always reaffirms writer-director Eliza Hittman as a filmmaker of uncommon sensitivity and grace."  On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 92 out of 100, based on 38 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".

And the song is incredible, of course, as is the cover version featuring Van Etten's duet with Norah Jones on the track. Look that up too.
