"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#185 (of 365) "Shallow End" Superchunk

8/29/2025

My favorite band of all time just released their 17th album, including 4 B-sides collections, so really they're 13th of strictly new music, and they have 13 songs on this countdown, including 2 from their 1995 B-sides collection Incidental Music 1991-95, released in 1995. I discovered the band kind of late, in 1995, when "Hyper Enough" was getting decent airplay on alternative stations and MTV. And it was the right time to fall for the band as not only did they have the new album Here's Where the Strings Come In (featuring "Hyper Enough" and "Detroit Has a Skyline," among others) but Incidental Music came out and their previous full-length Foolish was only a year old. That year, I had just moved into my first apartment, in Piscataway NJ, and it was a 1-bedroom without washer/dryer (shared laundry facilities were several buildings away) on the 2nd floor that my dad and I moved me into in the rain (if I recall correctly). I picked Piscataway because it was close enough to my new job and was also where I had lived from 1989 to 1993 (at Rutgers) before moving to New Brunswick from 1993 to 95, and it was a mistake. I should have stayed in New Brunswick, where there were things to do and it was almost sort of a city (even then) but I stuck to my suburban routes and hated living there. Then I went further south, more suburban in subsequent moves, for reasons that are unclear now, for nearly 20 years before figuring out (quite late) that I actually much preferred the city living that I did from 1993-95 and have spent the past 13 years in Hudson County, across from NYC. Anyway, back in Piscataway in 1995, my life was kind of boring and lame, but I had plenty of time to listen to music, and I played nonstop those three 1994/1995 Superchunk albums on the way to loving the band that would become my favorite of all time. Probably the only good thing that came out of that year in Piscataway.
