"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#199 (of 365) "Regret" New Order

7/30/2025

Back in May of 1993, I was graduating with my engineering degree from Rutgers, and there was a week-long break after final exams before the actual graduation that was sort of known as a huge party week for those graduating. The underclassmen went home, because all the dorms were closed, and due to vagaries of housing that I could get into but won't hear I also didn't have a place to stay. But on June 1, I was moving into a house in New Brunswick where I would spend the next year going to graduate school, it's just my room upstairs wasn't available yet, as people were living in it still (they had the room until June 1 officially). Fortunately, we knew the people who were living there at the time and one of the rooms downstairs was going to be open, because the guy living there already moved out (for reasons I don't remember) so I moved into his bedroom for the remainder of May, including for graduation and all the parties up to graduation. I don't really remember the parties. I barely remember graduation. I do remember having some awesome times and parties at that house on Robinson Street in New Brunswick over the next year and I remember that summer having some of the most fun times in my life, while taking (quite easy, to me) graduate classes, working at the Livingston Campus Library and hanging out with with my roommate Norm, our friend Scott who lived on the same street, and the two girls who were subletting a room in our attic that summer, whose names unfortunately escape me. But what I remember most about May 1993 was sleeping in that little bedroom on the first floor of the house tucked behind the bathroom and kitchen, awaiting my college graduation, and listening nonstop to the new record from one of my favorite bands at the time, New Order.

Maybe I've forgotten the name and the address
Of everyone I've ever known, that's nothing I regret.
Save it for another day, it's the school exam
The kids have run away
