"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#233 (of 365) "Archie, Marry Me" Alvvays

5/26/2025

I have an interesting relationship with Alvvays, the Canadian indie pop band from Prince Edward Island. Their self-titled debut came out in 2014, and this song, among others, definitely made my radar. I liked it fine enough and liked the band fine enough, but I wasn't "in love" with the music, necessarily, and I know this because I was in Williamsburg one day in, maybe 2016 - I don't know - because I think it was Wolf Parade playing outside in a parking lot on a "reunion" tour, which wouldn't have happened until later in the 2010s, and Alvvays were opening for them. Again, I may be confusing concerts in parking lots near the waterfront in Williamsburg (and I'm certain this parking lot has become luxury rentals) but I distinctly remember stopping at a bar on the way from L train to the venue, to grab a drink or two, maybe some food, because concerts never start on time and I figured I had time before Alvvays (the opening act) would come on. Then when I was walking to the show, I could hear them, playing, and I wasn't sure at first who it was, whether there was another opening act playing first, and I was briefly annoyed that I had left the bar too soon. Then, of course, as I got closer, I heard the opening chords of "Archie, Marry Me" and thought "Oh shit fuck, I missed them" and started fast-walking to the venue as the played the entirety of this song, their last song of the night.

So that sucked. But I have since seen them in concert and since become a massive fan, oddly on the strength of another track from their debut album "Ones Who Love You," which I must have missed on the first go round but became obsessed with around COVID times, in the winter (it references cold and winter and really really spoke to me, while out walking Elie in frigid morning temps while having COVID). Anyway, that led me to become obsessed with their entire catalog and they ended up with four songs on this countdown. Not bad for a band I didn't care enough about to leave a bar to see play a couple blocks away.
