#250 (of 365) "Talent Show" The Replacements

4/20/2025

#250 is a bit of a milestone, and I kind of can't believe I have to write another 249 of these. This seems like such a good idea when I started it. Anyway, this is the first track off the first album I'd ever heard from The Replacements, back at 17 years old heading to college, where my world of music would change forever, from pop/rock of the 80s, to alternative and indie rock for the rest of my life. It's interesting to me how many people I know still listen to 80s music they grew up with-- Bon Jovi or Def Leppard or whatever was popular when they were in high school. Like I get it, that's okay I guess, it's just odd to me. I mean yes, I still listen to The Replacements, who I discovered at 17, but really I don't ever choose to listen to anything I liked before then, and as the rest of the chart can attest, I continue to seek out and fall in love with bands that debuted in the 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and in the past five years. I'm not praising myself for keeping "current", it's just I think I'd get really really bored of music if all I listened to in 2025 were bands I liked four decades ago when I was in high school. I don't think I'll ever get bored of this song though, one of seven (7!) on the countdown from the greatest Minneapolis band.

Congrats on getting this far!

I've been enjoying reading, though I haven't been commenting. I have been a tiny bit sad to see that many of our most-convergent tastes (from back in the day) seem to be things that you've fallen away from a bit. But hard agree that it would feel unbearably tedious for me to just keep listening to what I grew up with. Though my own 'top 365' list would probably have about 30 Beatles songs, so maybe I shouldn't talk too big on that point.

Anyway, I've definitely discovered a few totally new-to-me things so far that I've loved. Excited to see what's still to come.
