#252 (of 365) "Interesting Drug" Morrissey

I listened to a 3-hour plus podcast on the The Smiths last year, part of a series called Bandsplain, and it was rather fascinating to hear the origins of Morrissey and Marr--how they met, their musical influences, what type of people they were in their youth, before they got famous. But hanging over all of it was the fact that Morrissey in recent years became a racist, anti-immigrant asshole who supports far-right fascist parties in England. Thee things that he’s said i are a complete 180 from what The Smiths stood for back in the 80s, lyrics about loneliness and love and anti-fascist screeds like The Queen is Dead. It's tough for me, now, since I'm so removed from my fandom to separate the two. Yes, great artists can be horrible humans. And even in the podcast, it sounded like he was always pretty anti-social and pretty much the cause of the band's breakup--his unwarranted hatred of Johnny Marr. But also he made some really great songs. Only two of his solo tracks made this countdown and this is the highest. Ten years ago, he would have had way more. It's a shame. His words never rang truer than today.
