"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#254 (of 365) "Moya" Godspeed You! Black Emperor

4/18/2025

This is the first of four tracks for GYBE to make the countdown. This is a Canadian post-rock band that broke through into my consciousness in 2001, literally the same summer that I discovered/fell in love with Neutral Milk Hotel, Modest Mouse, Grandaddy, Built to Spill and so many other indie rock legends that are populating this list. It's kind of crazy to think about what ended up happening that September, but as for Godspeed!, they put out their first record  F♯ A♯ ∞ in 1997 and followed with the amazing, incredible, indelible  Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000), which received critical acclaim and became one of the best albums of the decade. Yanqui UXO was a disappointing followup in 2003 and then they kind of disappeared for roughly a decade, before returning with a bunch of albums in the past decade. I've since seen them play live a few times and it's almost a religious experience, at least for someone who doesn't follow religion. This track comes from a 1999 EP released between their first two classic albums, named after band member Mike Moya, and also known as "Gorecki" as it is a reworking of the Polish composer's third symphony.
