"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#306 (of 365) "Season of the Shark" Yo La Tango

1/16/2025

I saw Yo La Tango for maybe the 15th or 20th time over the holidays, as part of their annual 8 Nights of Hanukkah concert series at the Bowery Ballroom, and they played "Season of the Shark." It's the first time I remember them playing this track, one of my favorites of theirs (hence, their place on this all-time list), which was super exciting and a highlight of the evening. The lowlight was that they didn't start their performance until after 10 and the band is significantly older than me--I'm guessing Ira and Georgia are in their 60s--so super props to them but on a cold winter night in Manhattan, when I live in Jersey, it's tough to weather the storm and make it through a full show and an encore that finishes after midnight at my age. I hate to say it, I really do, because 10 years ago, when I was in my early 40s, I was going to multiple shows a week from my Hoboken apartment, most of which did not in fact start any earlier than 10. And I never complained. I'm not sure what happened. I know my dog Elie has completely upended my sleep/work schedule, so now I'm an early bird, up before 6 every morning, and even during the holidays I'm not sleeping past 7, so that makes a midnight concert end (followed by more than an hour to get home, given the horrendous late night/weekend MTA and PATH headways) really, really challenging. Of course, I'm not stopping going to concerts, although I definitely doing less weeknight and winter shows (my only remaining tickets before March is January 31st when Real Estate comes to Jersey City on a Friday night -- very doable, 10 minutes from my house). They say old rockers never die, but I don't know what they say about aging fans who can't get enough of their favorite bands, but their bands aren't big enough to sell out seated arenas. Two days after the Yo La Tango show, I threw out my back and I'm still not recovered.

But hey, they did play Season of the Shark.

Please don't be afraid
No matter how much out there scares you so
Scares you so
Just look around
If it's not me then someone else you know
You're not alone at all
Ignore the shadows on the wall
They don't mean a thing
