"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#319 (0f 365) "Not Too Amused" Sebadoh

12/25/2024

Sebadoh arrived in my world with 1994's Bakesale, a near-perfect album that turned me into a superfan in an instant. Lou Barlow had been putting out pretty much homemade cassettes under the Sebadoh moniker since his Dinosaur Jr. days, and of course, the rough split with J Mascis led him to eventually turn Sebadoh into a proper band, with Jason Lowenstein contributing a bunch of songs of his own to their albums. They became indie rock pioneers, which is distinguished from the "alternative rock" of later Dinosaur Jr, mostly because Dinosaur like a lot of grunge-adjacent bands in the early 90s got signed to major labels in the wake of the massive success of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Sebadoh, like contemporaries Superchunk and Pavement, were just smaller (and less successful), making more pure, more messed-up music, with diversions upon diversions that elevated their gems ever more. By the early 2000s, "indie rock" was all I listened to, and that broad genre is still all I listen to today. This is the first of 6 Sebadoh songs on the countdown, and I believe the only one sung by Lowenstein not Barlow.
