"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#332 (of 365) "The Post" Dinosaur Jr.

12/13/2024

J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph formed a band in 1984 in Amherst, MA that they called Dinosaur. Some other band was named that and they eventually added the Jr. after the release of their second album, the brilliant You're Living All Over Me, which featured all-time classics "Little Fury Things" and "In a Jar." Their third album Bug came out in 1988 and featured one of the great songs of all time ("Freak Scene") and a bunch of other guitar distortion heavy music that the band had been known for. Unfortunately after the album's release (well, actually well before then), J and Lou had a massive falling out that saw Lou leave the band to focus solely on his side project Sebadoh, while J soldiered on and found mainstream-ish alternative success in the early 90s with Green Mind and Where You Been, which was when I first discovered the band, while in college. It was probably a few years before I learned about Sebadoh and I think to this day, they're slightly higher in my fandom than Dinosaur Jr., but for a time there in the mid-90s this band was right at the top of my list of favorite artists, the "next wave" of alternative heroes that followed the new wave 80s bands that were starting to fade. Three decades later, of course, it's the early Dinosaur Jr. material that I still listen to. The music that was made with Lou & Murph on those late 80s albums. In fact of the six Dinosaur Jr. tracks that made this list, four are songs with Lou and five are songs with Murph. Fortunately, Lou & J made up enough to tour together a few times over the past decade and I got to see the original Dinosaur Jr. live, which is as amazing a show as you might assume. This one is from Bug, which might be their greatest album ever.
