"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#353 (of 365) "Fast Peter" Moonface

11/10/2024

Back in 2011, I was still living in central Jersey, driving up to NYC or down to Philly, somewhat frequently, to go to shows. Maybe one or two a month at most, despite the hour plus drive and need to find parking and navigate unfamiliar neighborhoods. By 2013/2014, after I moved to Hoboken, I was going to one or two shows a week, cruising across the PATH into Manhattan in minutes, navigating now familiar subways into "deep" Brooklyn neighborhoods to see amazing bands at tiny venues at the starts of their careers, or even more amazing bands at live venues in the heart of their careers. But back in 2011, my favorite artist was Spencer Krug, lead singer of Sunset Rubdown, my favorite band at the time, and co-lead singer of Wolf Parade, a top 5 favorite band at the time. And he or his publicist or his record label invited me (famous Vague Space blogger at the time) to a invite-only free special show where he would be unveiling new music under a new moniker "Moonface"--which basically became his solo career after Sunset Rubdown first then Wolf Parade both went on extended hiatuses. The show was not at a concert venue, but as it turns out, in someone's apartment on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a nondescript building on the border of Bed-Stuy. Me, being the suburban white boy with little knowledge of the city at the time, didn't know whether I should drive there (fear of traffic, getting lost, and parking in what I heard would be a bad neighborhood--again, knowing nothing) or navigate the train system after parking in Hoboken (fear of getting lost). I think I went trains but what I remember from that time is being scared--or more accurately, intimidated by the "big, scary city" and now, years later, I probably have walked the street the apartment was on dozens or hundreds of times and not thought twice about "danger" because it isn't dangerous (NYC is the safest large city in the country). But I digress.

The show was just Spencer on keyboards on a makeshift stage in someone's living room (literally) with Camilla from Sunset Rubdown there to assist, and a drummer whose name I didn't catch. There were possibly thirty to forty of us squeezed in there, maybe less. And I stood maybe five feet from genius, my favorite artist of all time (at the time). It's one of the great music memories of my life. And leading up to it, all I could think about was "driving to Bed-Stuy."

"Fast Peter" was the first song he played that night, by the way. It's the only "Moonface" track that made the list (Spencer as an artist makes it many, many more times).  And this is the 4th song from 2011 on the chart so far!!
Also this video I found might actually be from this show (!) It kind of looked exactly like that.
