"Remember saying things like 'we'll sleep when we're dead'
And thinking this feeling was never gonna end.

Remember that night you were already in bed,
Said 'fuck it' got up to drink with me instead

#362 "Up the Junction" - Squeeze

11/1/2024

Squeeze is the 2nd band I ever saw live. 1989, freshman year at Rutgers, I saw "The Smithereens" at the Livingston Gym(?)--an old basketball arena I think, in, say October, and a month later I saw Squeeze with my friends. Sometimes I go to shows -- like in August at Asbury Lanes, for Built to Spill, that are all ages and a) parents bring their teenage children and b) somehow, some way, teenagers on their own became BTS fans (the original) and I kind of lament that I didn't even have the thought or courage to get to Philly in high school and see awesome bands play. And then after college, I went through way too many years of--well, less than ideal attempts to accept my sexuality and be comfortable with going to concerts by myself, but I try not to look back because I sure as hell have made up for it in my 40s, but long story short, I don't really remember the Smithereens show or really any of their music but I do remember being so amazed at seeing Squeeze in 1989 that I went back to the dorm room and called my favorite radio station - 97.5 WPST "Trenton and Philadelphia" and requested Squeeze's "Hourglass," which was a minor hit at the time (and maybe one of the only songs of those I knew until the concert). Then I waited up with my roommates until like 2 am (no big deal back in college) until they played the song. I don't know why I remember that. I do remember that.

"Up the Junction" is the only Squeeze song to make this list. It's an amazing track. It's from 1979, one of very few (less than 5, definitely) songs from before the 80s on this list.
