#41 (of 365) "Cody" Mogwai

Mogwai's amazing 1997 debut, Young Team, ushered in the post-rock movement, rock songs with heavy guitars and drums that sounded orchestral, and had no singing or lyrics, just pure unadulterated majestic music and 30 years later, they're my 3rd favorite band of all time. The follow up, though, 1999's Come on Die Young, features two songs in my top 41, both of which have singing and lyrics, a shift in their signature sound that not only didn't detract from their previous brilliance but actually elevated the band to the all-time greats, in my mind. The lyrics to "Cody" are nothing special, but the way they weave through the music is perfect. And every time I hear this verse in the middle of the track I am stopped in my tracks and just listen.

When I drive alone at nights
I see the streetlights as fairgrounds
And I tried a hundred times
To see the road signs as Day-Glo

Old songs stay till the end
Sad songs remind me of friends
And the way it is, I could leave it all
And I ask myself, would you care at all?
